Interesting that only one person has mentioned bridal shows. I have considered doing one but am not yet sold on their value.
Do it big or don't do it at all seem to be the words of advice.
I did my first bridal show in August. I booked 7 weddings from that show. I did my second show the first weekend in January. So far I've booked four weddings from it. Yes, I believe that bridal shows work. But they don't work for everyone. Some photographers I spoke with complained that they hardly ever book a wedding from a show.

I got a bride off of Wedding Wire last year, and I just have a basic listing. So, you never know, new business does come in, but mostly I've been talking with referral brides lately.

The big mistake I'm seeing here is in confusing a channel of communication with being "a way to promote your business." Facebook, Google, bridal shows and word of mouth are channels to communicate. You could be on Facebook, do bridal shows, show up in Google SERPs, have word of mouth, and still not effectively promote the business.
Strip clubs and poker games can make or break you though. Fast. That's only for the sharpest guys in this business.
