p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · EOS M - who likes it?

I have been very critical of the EOS M, but I tried an EOS M in a store near my office today and sort of liked it. Well, I liked it enough to impulse buy one off ebay tonight anyway. For what I use a small body for, I thought I would like it more than the s100 I got for Christmas.

I don't plan on shooting any sports with this - I'm aware of the AF complaints - but any folks out there like this body? Is the kit zoom decently sharp? The 20mm seems to have gotten pretty good marks.

I wouldn't mind one if an optical finder for the hotshoe was available for the the pancake (20mm). I wonder if the Oly VF-1 would work? It's designed for the 17mm 2.8/17mm 1.8. At the M4/3 2.0X that would be 34mm equivalent coverage. So 20mm x 1.6 is 32mm. That's pretty close as the true field of view would be just outside the VF-1 brightline.

EOS M2 hopefully will adress the few major shortcomings and they need to start moving their arse on lenses IMO.

I'll buy one when there's a full frame body.

If they pop a PDAF chip on it, and a good EVF- I would not ever consider a fuji x100s and all the other mirrorlesses. I basically want the fuji x100s/xpro2. If Canon ever does this, I'll buy one, otherwise, it's not super likely as it doesn't suit my needs.

+1: I might more deeply look into a mirrorless camera system when it comes with a novel FF sensor and improved in other specs, too. I will stay away from the first few generations of mirrorless systems certainly.

I would like it more if it were full frame.

Quicker AF, EVF, tiltable screen on the M2 would be sweet.

As far as a FF sensor I just don't see that happening anytime within the next few years, but I hope I'm wrong.

Um.. to be honest I could be wrong but I'm not enamoured. I think for my travel camera I really need something more like a s100, so my next one will probably be the exceptional sony rx100. Fantastic quality sensor inside a body which apparently really works well

I think I've slightly outgrown my s95 to be honest.. I felt it got in the way a bit on my last trip.

I would probably own one today if it could focus faster than my finger nails grow.

Also if they are serious about being a player in the mirrorless market they need to release more lenses and an updated body soon. The Olympus OMD is looking really nice and I am tired of waiting.

I will probably own one eventually, for a lightweight backpacking camera.

It is a possibility that it will take a few years, but look what Sony is doing with its first mirrorless FF camera RX-1 - of course this model has drawbacks like not interchangeable lenses, but it is a good beginning! In this market we currently look better what the competition is already doing or planning since Canon nowadays only seems to move if the pressure is on from competitors. If the competition is not doing it, Canon won't do it as well.

+1

Adapters for FD lenses are showing up, if the price dropped enough, canon had one as a refurb, I might consider getting the M through CLP just for my FD macro kit; bellows, 50 thru 200 macros, would make for a nice low budget still life, studio setup...

I would have bought one if they had come out sooner. I ended up going M43 which currently has the best selection of lenses. It has been a bumpy road for me, but that is mostly my fault. I bought a lower end body and miss some of the features and handling of the more expensive one, plus learning the controls has been slow and frustrating for me since I have never used anything but a Canon.

But it is a lot easier to carry around than my 20D. I was hesitant to buy any lenses for the camera other than the kit zoom because I wasn't sure I'd like it. But I think I have decided to keep it now.

The negative on the M for me is that there are only two lenses. I know it can use the EOS lenses, but I wanted a smaller system. If I want to use my current lenses, I'd rather just get a new DSLR.
