If you look here, you'll see that the VF has 2 prisms. For an camera with RF design, this seems to me as an unnecessary complication. Why not make it a straight line? As I'm sure the bean counters went over it, I'm sure there's a sound technological reason behind it. I just wonder what it is.

It's not a rangefinder, and the prisms allows a longer path between the lens elements even with a narrow body. The same principle is used in many older binoculars:
