When i get a new lense, the first test shots are of my toes propped on my desk HAHA
My first shot is always of my dog, unless it's longer than 200mm. Then it's of a squirrel, a tree, or a squirrel in a tree.
One habit that you may or may not consider weird... no lens goes in the bag unless it's been turned to infinity, a habit I developed when I started shooting with Nikon lenses. That way I always get instant feedback as to which direction I need to turn the focus. It also makes the non-IF lenses their most compact.

I will often, while at work, just pull my camera out, put a nice lens on it, and sit it near my desk. It's almost like a little calling: don't worry, eventually you can get away from the grind and go shoot.

I try to make my first shot with a new lens or camera something interesting (like a squirrel) rather than a bookshelf. I remember rushing to get my 5D3 home before dark so I could get to the squirrels before they went to bed. I didn't have time to get the settings right.
I do have pictures of toes, but I don't take them compulsively.

I always turn two circles counterclockwise and toss some grass in the air to judge the wind velocity before taking the first shot. But then everybody does that.
And, of course, I shoot test charts and then disassemble the lens to see how it is put together before taking any actual photographs. Other than that nothing unusual.
