Third day of gray Florida overcast --- added third image @ IS0800. Once again this is center focus @290mm. This one has been tweaked to bring up the light.
I hope this post helps someone --- very frustrating to search Kenko and find so much talk and so few images ... and then by luck find the insight to shoot at 290 to keep center focus.

After a ton of research I bought a Kenko 1.4 DGX. The key concern was IQ which logically turned on the center focus. Most folks said IQ was good but at 300 the center point AF would hunt or not work at all. Many said other focal points worked well --- adding that manual worked fine for them.
Interestingly two posts said the center point worked if they backed down to 290 --- so I figured it was worth a try.
The Kenko arrived on an overcast Florida day, but the light was still fairly good and of course I had to try.
Even in marginal light the Center AF works well at 290mm on my T2i
These are ISO200 JPG straight from the camera; cropped to 100%, No tweaks. I haven't worked the RAW yet.
Given the light I'm very pleased with the results --- but for the benefit of those considering the Kenko 1.4 DGX on a 70-300L I'm posting these so you can decide for yourself.
