Visited my parents i FL over the holidays and made a trip to Black Point Loop in MErritt Island NWR. I felt a bit range limited with the 5 D Mark II and the 100-400. A used 7D or if I save up for a while a 1D Mark IV and 1.4 extender might be in the works... Just dreaming a bit there.
Yeah I fought with th framing on the gator. In order to not have the snout obstructed by the grass I couldn't reallyshorten the perspective and even though the tail was partially in the water I don't want it to look cut off.
Some of the initial loads aren't the fastest but for the most part it seems fine to me. That's my line of work for what that's worth.
Nice job on these Mark, you would never know you aren't a wildlife guy. For c&c, I would like to see more room in front of 1 and the bird moved to the right in 6 so that it is less centered.
Thanks for the C and C Tim. The issues you point to are exactly why I'm not much of a wildlife guy. My focus and recompose abilities are a bit lacking. I don't trust the outer points on the Mark II soI use center point and try and compose from there. Meanwhile the critter decided to move and I get flustered and have to start over or curse myself for missing the shot1
#5 is just lovely
#1 has great color and for me the vignette worked here
#2 nice comp
#3 nice whites and nice shot
#4 seems a bit dark to me
#6 not your fault on the light
#7 I'd do all I could to keep my distance from that one!
#8 tight, horizontal may have worked better

Have you tried using the back button focus technique - that will speed up your focus and recompose problem ~ Ron

Hey, RR, this is a very nice set and you don't have to apologize for your reach -- it's very often great to see a bit of landscape around the critter. Back button focus is definitely helpful for this stuff, but it looks like you fumbled your way into some very nice photos even without it.

OK have to add one more. There was a turkey vulture standing on the top of one of the viewing platforms. I thought what the heck, so I started slowly approaching. I don't like spooking birds so I took it very slowly and atthe first sign of agitation I was going to stop. After a couple minutes i became less concerned about spooking him and more concerned that I had found a vulture undergoing an existential crisis. I began to wonder if he had finally had enough of WAITING for something to die.
