In a very real way, the whole world owes a debt of gratitude to Yellowstone's magnificent (and alien ) geothermal regions. They were the primary reason for its designation as a national park- the first in the world.
Luckily (and wisely), the idea caught on.

What a great photo! The way the orange bacterial mat curves at the bottom really frames the shot nicely and adds great depth. Although I often like to take photos from the hill in the background for a birds eye view, there is something special about that boardwalk. It's important to note the other contribution of Yellowstone to the world - Thermus aquaticus - the bacteria that revolutionized science and medicine. It was discovered in the park!
