The Galapagos Islands are entirely volcanic.
And most of those volcanoes didn't have fiery explosions (as did Mt St Helens). Instead, the lava oozed and flowed.
Some of it cooled to look like rope- hence the name.

Many things are like that, Tom. I understand the basic theory behind airplanes flying; but how a 747 actually gets airborne is still a mystery.
Even more of a mystery than how honey bees can fly. I mean, some "experts" tell us they can't .
Yes, Chris- the ropey look of the cooled lava is fascinating to me, also.
