Just received my new Canon 50mm 1.4 -- for the price tag I'm highly impressed. Although the below image is a bit soft (trying to get a moving child -- you know how that is) -- it is merely converted to B&W in LR4.

The picture isnt soft the DOF is extremely shallow at f/1.4....The highlights in the face are way over, and the only difference between the first and the second images appears to be the crop. I do like the composition. Have fun with your new lens.
I think there's a rule - when you buy it, you have to shoot it wide open for a month or so. After that, you stop down when you need to get the whole face in focus.
So press on...... but just for a month. We'll be watching!

Let's hope you shot RAW on this fine image!

Greg -- that's the challenge. I had one of the custom 7D settings on jpeg. Wasn't expecting to do anything but take a couple snapshots, then this happened. Murphy's law.
Thanks for the comments all -- 1.4 is extremely shallow. Still earning how to deal with the fractional focus plane.
