That's not possible; you must render a file i.e. export it, before you can add borders, watermarks, annotations, etc.

I'm thinking of a plugin that works more like topaz or photoshop. i.e. an executable that creates an "edit" of the original file and shows it related to the original image via stacking as opposed to exporting it.

However, I am looking at mogrify...

You can easily stack an exported image by selecting the "Add to this Catalog" and "Add to stack" options in the Export Location dialog box.
