A hired car and driver took me from Dal Lake and Srinigar, and included spending a couple hours at these old ruins.

Nope- not my bag.
Curious thing I've learned as I traveled: with rare exception, in economically poor countries like Kashmir, India, I seldom was concerned about my safety or the possibility of being robbed. Thievery is usually done by professional thieves. The general population might be quite poor by American standards, but the people tend to be at least as honest as my countrymen (probably a good bit more ).
That said, no matter where I travel, I'm very careful about what I eat, where I sleep, and keeping close track of my valuables- which are minimal.

The woman's yellow clothing was very typical of what I saw among the Indian people in the northern part of the country.
The pink sweater- on the other hand- was very contemporary style.
They both stand out because the ruins themselves are monochromatic.
