This interests me...sitting on the front of a 6D, a nice walk around kit!
Back in 78 my 1st SLR kit was a Canon A-1, 24 f2, 35 f2 and 50 f3.5 macro, loved that set
Interesting ? my old 35 f2 uses a 58mm, perhaps it's the AF/USM/IS tech that requires that size IDK...
The new 24 and 28 f2.8 ISs use 58mm filters...so maybe it is just more guts/electronics
Probably designed to minimise vignetting, so front element is bigger than you'd normally expect. Sigma 50 f/1.4 was designed like that and has much larger size than most 50's of that speed.

I also believe that vignetting is one of the main reasons for designing it with a bigger thread.

Thanks for the test shots! How is the autofocus?
As I no longer own the 35L I'm unable to perform any direct comparisons, but so far, I have not noticed a meaningful difference in AF-speed. I imagine, though, that if the old 35L was ultra-snappy, the new 35 f2 IS is just snappy
