So, I've got my Canon 5D Mk2s, so I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to quality imagery. However, I don't always want to lug these around. I am quite displeased with what the majority of the point and shoot cameras and phones are capable of.

Any recommendations for a good point and shoot that provides low noise and decent exposure in low light? I'm hoping to find something under $500. Want the flexibility of crisp/clean macro as well as decent wides.

Thanks!

Ari

Check out the RX100 and the S100, but great performers. Or maybe a micro 4/3 kit would work?

just bought a Sony RX100, loving it, fantastic reviews....if you're willing to spend $650 it's considered the best current P&S available...had a Canon S95 for a couple years but couldn't resist the Sony...Canon S100's are going for $250 new right now so that's probably the best value in a P&S currently

The RX100 is worth the extra money over an S110 or other compact P&S.

I have a Lumix GX1 and for when I don't want to lug around my big heavy DSLR kit the GX1 is amazing.

Another vote for the RX100. Great image quality for the size, useful bounce flash capability and very good video if you want it. So far I've found that DxO does better lens corrections for it than ACR and Raw Developer.

I carry my Canon S100 with me at all times. It augments my other Canon DSLR cameras and it does not disappoint.

RX100 gets my vote as well. I had an S95 before the RX100, and that was very nice as well but RX100 is great! And the little built-in bounce flash is also proving to be very handy.

I recently bought a P7100 and while it's a great camera and the quality is top tier it is a bit more bulk than i would like in a P&S.

I have a G10 but have added a G1X. Not saying it is the best out there but I wanted a VF and as I knew the images and way the G10 functioned satisfied me I assumed the G1X would be a good upgrade.

It is...it produces great IQ and A3 prints look gorgeous. My main interest is sea / cityscape however....so not bothered about capturing fast movement or doing macro....although I have a close up filter that works well. Also other filters that fit perfectly with the conversion ring (a few s from eBay). Looking to add a Cokin system soon.

What I would say is the G10 slipped into my jacket pockets with ease.....the G1X less so...I tend to take it out in a small bag but still use the G10 as my take anywhere anytime camera.

Thanks everyone. It sounds like there are about 3-4 to research in detail before I decide. Always get useful and intelligent insights from FredMiranda users.
