p.1 #1 · Wide zoom and primes or normal zoom?

Hello all.

My current setup today is the Nikon AF 28mm f2,8, Nikon AF 105mm f2,8 and the two ring AF-D 80-200mm f2,8.

I am missing more optics in the normal/wide range for landscape work.
My thoughts are getting the Nikon AF-S 16-35mm f4, keep the 28mm and get a 50mm and a 85mm.
Second thought is getting the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f2,8

Both options will recuire selling the 105 and the 80-200 to afford new optics.

I do mostly landscape photography and family shooting so my 80-200 sits in the bag most of the time.

For that type of shooting on full frame I could easily get by with a 16-35 f4 (I use an older and much lighter 18-35), 50 1.8, & 85 1.8 but can you live the rest of the time without the 105 and 80-200. I couldn't personally live without the 70-200 2.8 which is probably why I haven't upgraded to the 16-35. Well that and its size/weight.

Good luck with this touch decision.

Like Mike says, the 16-35 f4 would fit the bill well for landscape work. You could also consider the Tokina 17-35 as a less expensive option. With either wide zooms of these you could keep the 105, and sell the 80-200. If you still wanted something long, a second hand Nikon 180 2.8 would be a nice addition. It is lightweight and as sharp if not sharper than the 80-200 (a subject of much debate). Good luck with your decision.

When I switched to Nikon the first 2 lenses I bought were the 50 and 85 1.8 G lenses with the plan to pick up either the Nikon or Tokina zoom to cover the wide end. Like you I shoot mainly landscapes and family stuff, so the range will suit me for about 90% of what I like to shoot. However, I will eventually get the new f/4 70-200 because I really liked the Canon equivalent for compressed landscapes. I've never really liked mid-range zooms, except for the 1 wedding I shot. My Canon kit was 17-40, 70-200 f/4 IS with a 50 1.4 and 90 mm macro, and it covered everything for me.
