My 1st stop was at Bowling Ball Beach, just north of Gaulala, CA, about a 4 hour drive from San Jose.
I had read about how to get there and the trail to the beach.
Well it's fine until you get to the place where the last six feet is a cable & timber ladder. Wet timbers....
Got about 1/2 down & lost my footing and tumbled about 3 ft to the drift wood pile.
Shh.. The wife doesn't know about this
Nothing broken, either body or camera gear, but I was a little banged up & rattled.
Thinking about climbing back up after sunset wasn't a comforting thought
I had brought my Yaktrak cleats but didn't use them for the descent but did for the return!
I was sharing this location with another photog, so not as much freedom as I wanted.....
I don't feel this shot is that inspired & I was disappointed that I didn't take more intimate shots.
Sort of got off on the wrong foot, if you get my drift... http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8208/8227781379_3dd4d4f7e5_b.jpg
This is a closer view of the stack/arch taken with a Mamiya 150mm/EOS setup.
Got this lens for Mamiya 645 film gear, but found out it is very sharp on the 5D.
The sky was really that color as the brewing storm clouds were broken through w/sun http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8204/8227782791_8f9acd3182_b.jpg
I'm up that way fairly often and these are very representative of the look of the coast. For sime reason the Bowling Ball Beach shot isn't showing but I like #2nd - great light on the water.
Hi, Dan. Glad you survived your scare. Bowling Beach has just been added to my list. Looks very cool. I really like the Elk Beach shot. Really nice coloration in the water. Contrasts very nicely with the overcast skies. Is that in Elk? My wife and I have stayed at a B&B in Elk a couple of times. That area is gorgeous.
Yeah, that ladder at BB Beach is a bit of a challenge when it is wet and at a slant. I didn't slip and fall but did welcome a bit of assistance from another person getting my gear up it on my return.
Your shot reminds me that I'm looking forward to a return. Thanks.
Ed, I am pretty sure this is in Elk. I doubled checked and its called Greenwood State Beach.
I was going for the light on the water but it's tricky. Get a bit too much and the shots blown out.
Definitely a place & region I want to explore when there's a bit more sun.
