Hello,

I have a very simple question. I am shooting with a D800 and I have a particular image that I'd like to get printed. I'm probably going to print through Bay Photo because I've had good experience with them in the past and they are right down the road. I would like to print a 20x30 and I use Lightroom 4- no Photoshop at my disposal. When exporting this file for printing I've heard that "the printers will automatically up-res the image." What is your take on this? When exporting the file, should I export with any sharpening settings? Should I up-res and if so, do I mess with the PPI?

I sincerely hope this question has not been beaten to death in past threads but if you know of a similar thread, please feel free to link to it. I print very little so I'm hoping someone here can help...

Why don't you ask the print company, when they are just down the road ? Only they knows exactly what they will do with your files before printing.

Ask them:

1) About resolution and document size for the intended print
2) In what color space and file format they would most like to receive the file
3) For the ICC profile for their printer/paper process for soft proofing within LR4, if you are comfortable with that step.

you can export to a specific size and add sharpening both in LR, and upon export.

I also shoot with a D800, and I would not hesitate to sharpen to taste in LR, export to the proper size, and add a light to medium sharpen on the export. I have gotten absolutely beautiful results when sending prints to WHCC using this method, I would assume Bay is very capable too.
