From the looking I've done so far the screw size is different for the two versions. I've read one post that center to center distance of the screws is also slightly different (this does not correlate with the wimberley 602 which is compatible with both version 1 and 2). You might find the lens will not balance with a heavy body on the old foot...

Does anyone know if the RRS replacement foot for the Canon 500 f4 L IS will fit on the new Version II 500 Lens? My 500 Ver II arrives in a few days
Sorry traveler, you gotta get the new RRS LCF-53 replacement foot.
Congratulations on the new lens. You will love it.

What happened with the 500 tripod mount foot ?
Canon have revised/beefed up the 500 MkI foot in such a way that in 500 II the foot mount flange template is same as in all other supertelephoto lenses, i.e., 400/600/800.
Therefore 500 MkI feet do not fit 500 MkII any longer.
The unfortunate thing is that in addition to lightening up the 500 II lens and moving its C. of G. away from the lens front, they have also moved the tripod mount towards the lens front, thereby creating a major setup imbalance with the 1D series camera mounted.
I am reasonably happy with the new RRS replacement foot, although I can't tell for sure how well it balances on a gimbal head because I use the lens hand-held exclusively.
We have the 600II and the 500II and they seem to balance on the RRS gimbal just fine with the RRS replacement foot using 1Dmk4. The RRS foot fits 400II, 500II, & 600II. Congratulations on your new 500II.
