"Mountain of gold?" Not sure why it was given that name by the early Spanish explorers.
But it is certainly a rugged and lovely section of the "Central Coast," near San Luis Obispo.

If I had my choice of places to live, I'd choose Morro Bay. I really love the Central Coast, except on summer weekends; I'd leave things to the hoards of tourists and drive into the mountains and hide
