I drove to the Bass Pro store in Manteca to purchase a pair of Muck waterproof boots, and after that decided that I'd drive another 20 miles further north to check out the sandhill cranes at the Isenberg Crane Reserve near Lodi.
Problem was that the late afternoon sun was not in my favor as the birds were on the south side of Woodbridge Road. But, occasionally a bunch of cranes would fly in (heading west) from Cosumnes Preserve, so I took some distant shots. EXIF info: 7D + 400mm/f5.6L lens, mostly at ISO 640. Sunset shots with 7D + Tamron 28-75mm lens, ISO 1000. All photos, except sunset shots, greatly cropped.

Also being focal length challanged I feel your pain on the Sandy shots

I went to Bosque with the FM crew last Dec. and my 400 worked pretty well, but we were very close and had thousands of subjects.
