I like the 4th Generation Designs CP-42 lens plate. It's a relatively compact, custom fit attachment for the tripod mount foot that gives it an Arca-Swiss (A-S) dovetail rail, plus a extension on the front where you can clamp a flash bracket.
I also like the Don Zeck lens caps - I get mine without the handle attached, which allows me to stand the lens on its nose. It normally comes with the handle attached, but Don will not do that if you ask, and it'll still be included with the cap when you get it, just not attached.
+1 on both, IMO, Don Zeck lens cap is a must have. To carry it around, you may consider getting a gura gear 22l+ bag. 300 also takes the 2xIII well and I used it extensively.
Sorry for the Auztralian accent ....
S1 is series 1...
No problem, Alan, I understand, although the Aussie ways of geography I find confusing. For example, where would your Wagga Wagga North-South-West be located .

+1 on these two things. The exact same items that I have. For the LensCoat, I use the black one because, after doing some research, it makes virtually no difference for wildlife shooting.
+1 - except I use the Don Zeck cap with the handle attached.

Al, here is a less expensive alternative dustcap for 300 f/2.8 IS. The only problem with it is that the cap prevents the hood mounting.
However, for lens storage at home, or if you are taking it out without the hood, the Kaiser dust cap is perfect.
Furthermore, I am very happy with the Tenba LL300 carrying bag for the lens. Here's the B&H link.
It is a shoulder top-loading bag specifically made for 300 f/2.8 (hood reverse mounted) + pro size camera (e.g. 1DMkII ).
