Barbara, #2 is better. It use more darker tones. keep the white ( it is on the edge of being too light), but build in some darker greys and some blacks.
I always associate Half Dome as a stormy location and want to fee that here.

Thanks Tom, I appreciate the suggestion and was also feeling that the white's are pushed a little too much but not overexposed according to the histogram.

Barbara,
The basic problem is that the whole Half Dome area is 50 shades of grey ().
Plus you were there in mid-day when the sunlight washes out most of the shadows and textures.
So, the question I tackled was this: what to do with the first image you posted here:
1. Using the simplest techniques, I used -12 brightness and +5 contrast.
2. Then I did some careful sharpening.
The following image is the result.
Please note that all sliders can be used according to one's taste. These tasted about right to me.
