There are small tidbits of things to like about the newer flashes but overall I never understood the hoopla. Consider though: there are some things YOU might want that the 550EX lacks. With newer cameras with internal slave flash control you can control an off camera 550EX. However, *I don't think you can* control the 550EX from the camera controls when the 550EX is in the hotshoe of the camera. You have to use the controls of the 550EX. You have to use the controls of the 550EX. I was reading about this and thats true from what i read 550ex is by the back of the flash only. I actually preferred the 580exI to the exII. Good to know. I'm trying to make the compromise between getting good enough gear and not overspending especially as I'm getting started. I feel like im splurging enough buying a 5d mark II and 24-70lII .
