Just wondering if anyone is holding out on the purchase of the 5D Mark III due to price. I am and I believe that Canon will lower the MSRP to $2799 before Christmas. This will allow the Ebay retailers to lower the price to around my high price point of $2499. What do you think of my election night prognostication?

I think not likely this year. But I'll light a candle in the window for you on that idea.

I too believe the 5DIII is over priced and am waiting... Currently thinking about buying a 5DII and waiting to see if Canon ever comes out with a Mega-pixel camera to compete with the D800

I think we're going to see the price reduction in the next two weeks. I'm that confident. I just think Canon has to do something to stimulate the slumping DSLR sales besides their worn out and usually meaningless rebates. But I'm usually wrong so don't hold your breath.

I don't see it dropping to the 2500 level with the 6D sitting at 2K on release. There is just not enough separation on pricing.

I am not sure if $2500 will be the price anytime soon. However, I would not be surprised if prices went down substantially from here if Canon and its dealers were interested in moving any of their stock.

Surely they won't drop prices leading into Xmas. Maybe early next year, but I doubt it'll be much.

Probably not. I think $2799 is a good price for the 5d3. It is a great camera.

I held out until I could get one for under $2900; I bought one for $2850 as soon as I could.

Did you do this before or after MAP went into effect?

I'm waiting until next year. I've recently negotiated a used 1Ds Mark III, which I'm waiting on. And I bolstered my IQ with a 5D2 a while back. So I'm in much better condition for imaging than I was a year ago, giving me some breathing room.

I'm not saying the 5D3 is overpriced, it's just out of my range at the moment unless something changes.

I will be waiting, price is, IMHO, very high, just like all recent canon releases.
I don't have a canon camera right now, using a D3s at the moment, but I kept most of my canon lenses, as I just couldn't sell them.
I really, really want to use my canon lenses as I miss them very much, but I want a FF camera with good AF and it's just very hard to justify the purchase of a 5DMIII right now, specially considering what the opposition is offering, at a lower price (at least in Europe).
I see little reasons to buy a 5DMIII instead of a D800, except for the fact that the D800 does not have an EF mount...
So I will be waiting for the price to come down, even though it's a pain to see those fine L lenses kept away, unused...

I am waiting on price also. Problem is I have to many clicks on my mk ii and wouldnt be right to shoot another wedding season with it. I will have to decide between another mk ii or spend some money on a mk iii.

I'll wait. While I can afford it at today's price, it is simply not worth that price to me. When it gets to a more reasonable price, Canon will get my money.

I bought mine last spring and am glad I did. It was a big upgrade from the Mark 2 and I enjoy the heck out of the camera. I like having one camera that gives me great results in lost of settings (airshows, birds, street, travel, studio, and landscape). My 1dmk3 is not getting a lot of use these days.

I am holding out on 24-70 f/2.8 II until its price drops to $1,600 (new)......as long as it takes, even if it turns out to be never. Those bastards thrive on our desire to get the stuff whatever the cost. Well, not this time, Kwanon.

With out a doubt I'm in a holding pattern, gonna stay crop body until next year, exploit my 40D a bit more and continue to round out my L glass...100L mac here I come.

The new 24-70 f4L IS is my kind of lens but it's cost is nuts; not unlike the initial pricing we are seeing across the board these days. I've the older EF 24-85, picked up 14yrs ago with an EOS3, it's not an L but it's a sweet little lens, continues to serve me well.

Peter, greed, desire is indeed a driving force, to borrow lyrics from a Porcupine Tree song it's "the curse of there must be more"

I'm interested in the new 24-70 2.8 as well. Just waiting for it to drop into the $1800 range. I doubt it will ever go lower then that. In the mean time who knows, Canon might surprise us with a 24-70 2.8 IS. Unfortunately, I can't see that selling for anything less then $3000.
