As big and aggressive as Africa's buffalo are (males up to 2,000 lbs), they are a prey species because of lions. Consequently people and their vehicles present a possible threat to them, and they become very alert at our approach.
Shot with a hand-held 400mm lens using Kodachrome 64 film.
Thanks Douglas, Ken, Ron and Morris.
Yeah, the first guy is big and chunky- so it might be an oldster.
I wasn't buffaloe'd into taking the pics, Ken , but thanks for the terrible pun (it saves me from having to think of one ).

Thanks Birdie, Ken and Frog.
As alert as those egrets are to our van's presence, it makes me wonder if they don't serve as an early warning system for the Cape buffalo. A subtle symbiotic relationship.
Birds have great day vision, buffalo have great senses of smell, and they both have excellent hearing. Every little bit helps when there are hungry lions around.

Thanks Tim, Herb, Chris, Conrad and Tom.
No IS, Tom, and no autofocus. And I manually metered for exposure settings.
Much of the time I was shooting at 1/125 or 1/250 sec, with ISO 64 on a 400mm lens, but most of my shots came out okay. Some luck was involved for sure .
