Canon officially announced the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS for $1,499 and EF 35mm f/2 IS for $849 to be available in December.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM
Featuring dynamic L-series optical performance in a compact, lightweight and durable design, the new EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM lens is well suited for all levels of advanced photography on the go. The ideal companion to Canon's full-frame Digital SLR cameras such as the EOS 6D, the lens features a constant maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the entire zoom range with 15 lens elements in 12 groups including two aspherical and two UD lens elements and a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm.
The EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM lens delivers gorgeous images with excellent detail at all focal lengths and includes a macro feature at the telephoto end with a 0.2m/7.9-inch minimum focusing distance and Canon's Hybrid IS system (with up to four stops of stabilization). The macro feature can be engaged through a switch on the lens barrel.

Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM
The successor to Canon's EF 35mm f/2, the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM lens is a compact and lightweight wide-angle prime lens that provides a high level of image quality and functionality.
The optics and mechanical workings are designed to improve image quality in the lens's periphery and provide faster and quieter AF than its predecessor, as well as Optical IS and optional full-time manual focus, all in a durable lens body with a high-grade design.
Featuring a circular aperture diaphragm and lens coatings optimized for minimal ghosting and flare, the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM lens achieves beautiful, soft backgrounds and amazing image quality.

Canon needs to be punched in the face for those prices. A f/4 lens for $1500? Have they decided to cut their volume in half or something on DSLR systems?

Apparently Canon thinks all their new lenses should cost ~1.6 times more than I think they should be priced.

Check the price of the 24-105 when it was newly released - it was around $1200 - and the dollar was stronger then.

The 35mm is the same price as the new 24mm IS 2.8 at release. The 24mm is already in the rebate program and can be bought for $699.

At $700 I find the 35mm still little pricey but probably a price I am willing to pay if it is good optically.

Well I pre-ordered the prime. If it doesn't suck it may replace the 35L, which is a lens I'm not particularly close to.

Now they just need to announce a sweet 50/2 that doesn't suck like a hoover and it would be perfection.

I'll be getting both lenses. The 24-70 f/4L IS is ideal for travel landscape photos with the occasional macro use thrown in. Will be getting it bundled with the 6D. There is no urgency for the 35 f/2 IS now, so I'll just wait for its price to fall....

PS: For those of you who bemoan the release of the 24-70 f/4 IS when there's a perfectly usable 24-105 f/4 IS lens around, please bear in mind the megapixel camera that many seem to be clamoring for.

Still slightly puzzled about the need for a 24-70 f/4 when canon already has a 24-70 f/2.8 and a (not much bigger) 24-105 f/4. But what do I know?!

I must be the only person who thinks the price for the 24-70 f/4 isn't out of line. After all, Canon currently lists the price of the 24-105 as $1149. The new lens is going to be:
- sharper (it has two UD lenses)
- less distortion
- better IS
- and .7x magnification. It's darn near a macro lens.

Once the hype fades a bit, the price will settle down to $1200 or so.

The 24-70 F4's macro mode seems a bit disappointing; according to DP review in this mode it wont focus at infinity and at max magnification has a working distance of only 3cm. I already have a few good primes in the same range and a 24-105, I think I'd prefer to stick with the extra range.
This isn't a zoom they really need IMO but I imagine it's intended to deter new FF buyers from going over to the dark side-remains to be seen if it'll work. I'm sure that putting the R+D money in to new sensor tech would work better.

This is why Canon's net sales have fallen (lost of market shares to Nikon, particularly DSLR and lenses), operating costs have increased and operating profits reduced.

The macro ability is activated by a switch on the lens so focus at infinity is irrelevant. It you want infinity focus and you were in macro mode you'd merely deactivate the switch to have a normal lens again.
