p.1 #1 · Contax Zeiss 35-70 - Issues with front of lens, thoughts?
Hi there
I have a Zeiss 35-70 (3.4) zoom.
Recently i discovered that the front part of the lens can be moved in and out about 2-3 mm
The outmost part e.g holding the lens by the zoom ring in one hand and then put some fingers on the outer part of the front of the lens i can drag the front in and out...
Since the whole front lens moves with it, as you can imagine the focus changes..
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this.
The lens is in good shape otherwise, has not (that i know of) been dropped or anything.

That sounds like a repair / cleaning gone wrong...

Alundeb. Are you sure so you can move the front part of the lens in and out. Don't you have problems with focus on occasion then since the outmost lens moves with it?

I can move it 2 mm.
Gotta be careful and not touch it after focussing.

Mine did that then got a little worse and started showing focusing issues depending which side it moved. I took it in and theres 3 easy screw to tighten underneath which work there way loose. Very easy fix, he did it while I waited.

"there's 3 easy screw to tighten underneath" Which three screws, underneath what?

Under the grip?
The focus grip? No, there are two screws that hold a little plate that sets the focus limit, and two cam screws with nylon washers.
When I remove the front lens the wobble is still there (in the helicoid).

Can anyone advise on the actual procedure and level of difficulty in adjusting infinity focus on a Contax 35-70 f3.4 MMJ?
This one has a Leitax mount; focus has drifted to the point it won't get near infinity and I need it fixed.
The problem is the shops I have called in this country won't touch a 'modified' lens, and I may have to send it back to Leitax, a real pain if that is required, but might be necessary.

I had a similar problem. The lens would slightly rock and throw out the focus, sometimes without me knowing until I opened the files. Easy fix though. rear mount off and theres 3 or 4 screws that just need tightening....

On mine, the front filter ring does not move with respect to the zoom ring, except when you move the zoom ring with respect to the lens mount (i.e. change the focal length).

Infinity adjustment is on the bayonet side, you have to take off the bayonet to access it. Not easy to explain and I'm not really keen on removing the bayonet from my copy yet again. Just don't look for it in the front.

OK, thanks for that dcjs, I'll speak to David Llado, best it is done by an expert, my mechanical skills are in bicycles and motorcycles, not optics ;-)
