I am going to be switching from a 7d to the 5dmkiii soon, and have noticed lately that you can pick up the kit with the 24-105 for just a tad more (around 300 dollars) than body only.
I am going to need to buy a zoom lens (I prefer zooms for ceremony) to go with the 5dmkiii anyway, as my other zooms are EF-S. Yeah, don't know what I was thinking there when I bought those a couple years ago.
Just wondering if it would be a good buy considering it's not a whole lot more than body only. Almost all my ceremonies are outdoors and I have heard that it is a good outdoor lens. For receptions and getting ready work I almost always use my 35L, so I am not concered about its performance indoors.
There is no way it is only $300 more.. where do you see this? If it is, no brainer and get it. Make it your walk around lens if you dont want to carry lenses.
If it is only $300 more, buy the kit, sell the 24-105 for like $800, and put that towards a better lens (not saying that it's a BAD lens, it's just that f/4 is not ideal for wedding photography, especially ceremonies in churches!!!)
Do you mean $300 more if you price the body at full retail? Now lets say you can get the 5D3 for <$3000 and then $300 more for the 24-105...I would say that's a steal
I'm planning on going FF later next year and the only reason I personally want the 24-105 is as a versatile lens for landscapes. It's a also a decent general walkaround lens too.
I use the 24-105mm on my 5D II for weddings and am very happy with it. Would prefer 2.8 but haven't jumped on the 24-70 2.8 yet because I think I would miss the extra reach. I work ceremonies with 24-105 in 5d II and 70-200 on 7D and am really happy with the combination. I have 16-35 2.8 and 50 1.4 when I need more light.
I bought one and use it only for video. It works great for that when light allows.
Have not used it in a wedding yet and don't think I would, but I bring it for backup.
If you need a walk-around, it's worth it. If you can sell it, it's worth it. It's not a great wedding lens, unless you shoot on the beach in the sun all the time.
I recently moved from 7D to 5DIII. I had a 24-105 for use on the 7D, so I bought a body only kit. In my experience, the 24-105 came alive when I went full frame. I use it regularly, and actually like it - and the pictures are great. Remember you can shoot at higher ISO's and still have great image quality with the 5DIII...
Yes, the 24-105 is a very useful walkaround lens. It focuses fast, it's much cheaper and lighter than the 24-70, and it has IS. I'd say it's a no-brainer
- Upgrading from a 7D you'll find the 24mm wide angle comes in handy
Nothing wrong with buying EF-S lenses when you had an APS-C camera. They're definitely a better choice on crop, and lenses hold their value well so you won't lose too much on resale

With the ISO capabilities of modern cameras I'm surprised that opinions like this persist.
Seriously, its a great lens for what it is. Great to have on your camera for those times when you really don't know what to expect.
Well, lets just say, if it's not going to be a walk around lens for personal use, there are better choices that could be had with the money you can get out of it. That's pretty much what I was trying to convey.
