Please update the 5D Mark III with the same firmware update, Canon, PLEASE.
Would be nice, but I have a feeling not a snowballs chance, they just found a new way to internal market segment the 1DX more and that is their greatest love. (perhaps they'd do the red point thing, but I doubt they unlock f/8)
Although with 5D3 price sagging a bit, maybe?
Maybe they are still working on adding more to the video and holding this major stuff back to release everything all at once?

Anyone who wants this same update for the 5D Mark III should call Canon customer service IMMEDIATELY. I did.
If you're referring to f/8 AF, don't waste your time, it's not going to happen. Canon is going to keep this feature for the 1-series cameras (their flagship camera line). After all, they have to somehow justify the outrageous price of the 1DX.
But now that f/8 AF has been shown to be a feature that can be enabled with a firmware tweak, it seems that some clever programmers might come up with a ML-style hack for the 5DIII (and maybe even the 7D!).

Excellent. You get what you pay for. Thanks Canon.
Now, when is the 2.8XIII tele converter going to be announced? Imagine: a 400 f/2.8 II + 2.8X = 1120mm f/8 with AF! The 400II gets more versatile. In a desperate pinch anyway. Actually, judging from the 2XIII performance a well designed 2.8XIII tele converter may be a truly viable option, except it would have to be called just a 2.8X. Or, regardless of Canon's recommendation stack the 2X and the 1.4X together.

John
How about just the AF illumination?, or are we going to have to pay another thousand bucks for it?

UPDATE
It appears as though Canon jumped the gun on this announcement, and have pulled the press release. However, I do expect to see it some time in the 7 days. I would also hope to see a 5D Mark III firmware update as well. I’ll keep asking around.

Squeaky wheels get the grease.
I believe this approach worked for the 5d2 when many people called in asking for 24 fps and better manual control for video. Kudos to Canon for continuing their trend of adding features with firmware updates. By staying in tune with your customer's wants and needs, you are gaining loyal customers. I'm still loving the 7d upgrade and hope some day to add a 5d3.

they aren't adding features, they are actually undoing stuff that shouldn't have been crippled and there in the first place, kudos for listening maybe that is more like it...

According to a friend that shoots Canon with me and heads a group that writes auto simiulation code for Mercedies, BMW and the like the focus system will not allow illuminated focus points.
We discussed this months ago and I found it odd for him to be wrong.
DPReview is always first to post which leads me to believe this is a HOAX.
