i am looking for a second shooter for a costa rica wedding on april 27th, 2013.
will anybody be in the area? this is a paid gig and will be dependent on experience.
sorry, can't pay for travel expenses
For the chance to shoot in Costa Rica (I lived there for 6 months), I'd do it if the pay was enough to cover my travel expenses
Looks like a flight would be $700, that seems like a fair rate for a second shooter isn't it.
Ah, the current state of the wedding industry. People are willing to work for free or cost. I understand it's a way to see a different location if you're going there for cost covered, but the client should be expected to cover these costs or not get a 2nd photographer. The most valuable lesson I had came early in my career: There's a domino effect with what you deliver to every client. When you chisel and chisel at your fees and what you give to people, pretty soon you're not left with much because your referral base knows what to expect from you. And if the client expects a 2nd and is unwilling to pay for travel, or they don't want a 2nd but you do, it's the photographer's priority to cough up the money to make this happen in a respectful way to the 2nd. And that means paying enough for them to walk away with some money. Pretty hard to run a business like that, isn't it?
I would imagine most photographers could shoot a wedding in their backyard and make more than enough to take a nice week-long vacation in CR, stress free. It isn't like having a second-shot CR wedding in your portfolio is going to change anything.
It's a destination wedding. Why do you need a second photographer? Shooting a destination wedding is easier than most other weddings, at least in my experience.
Having said that, if the B&G are expecting two photographers, then they should be willing to pay a fair price for one.

Seven hundred seems high for a second.
I was being a little sarcastic with my comment. I shoot $1200 weddings in central Wi, so even $500 would be way too much for a second (which is why I don't shoot with paid seconds).
If the OP is shooting $3500 weddings then maybe $700 isn't out of the question.
I was just throwing out that I speak Spanish and used to live in Costa Rica and would shoot in CR for free if travel was paid for, just for the experience.
