Just bought a D800 and need a new lens. How is the 70-200 VR II? I have read mixed reviews, especially regarding price versus performance. Thanks.
Seriously? This lens is so killer! Worth every penny.

Thanks Will, it's looking like the D800 is gonna get the nod from me over the D600.

The AF is worth the price of admission, Douglas.
The title of this thread and what Trenchmonkey is doing with a D800 is what kicked me into this discussion.
The possible full-frame resolution on this pixel-count makes heretofore wild cropping and/or huge printouts possible from a 35mm frame that go way beyond Panatomic-X film days!!
This is what made me spring for the D800e, despite my stable of most hi-end bodies from both Nikon and Canon over past ten years.
Do not laugh! My current walk-around casual kit is a D800e with a Nikkor 50mm 1.4G prime leading the way.
And thanks again, Trenchmonkey, for the utterly priceless pix you get at all those equine events!!!!!

...Show more → thank you kindly, Don. Quite the "walk around" kit I get sure some looks with my D800 300 f4 BushHawk set-up Hey, ya never know when a BIF or horse will fly by!!
hey Trenchmonkey - I am teetering on the edge of a D600 or D800/800e - if you have the time or inclination ... what would you advise from your experience so far? You sure make quite an argument for the 800. Lovely shots.

Hi Seth, many thanks
I haven't got my hands on the D600 yet...but the AF on the D800 is the best Nikon has put out.
Seen some great images taken with the D600 and it's a taste better @ high ISO than the D800(e)
Tough call, sorry I couldn't be of more help.
must not open anymore "product" threads from Will!! that 800 is gonna make it into my bag one day or another! Just stupid good as you have shown, yet again
As always, Will, excellent work So impressed with the focus of the rider and horse in the last shot. somehow you always seem to be able to pick out really good looking teams

Appreciate it, Tony. Like my wife, these ladies have learned to ignore the 'monkey...makes for some really good ops.
