p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Narrowed it down to One Einstein or 2 b800s ???

Just as the title says ive narrowed my choices down to either one einstein or two b800's with the vagabond mini, stands and softboxes probably, and a beauty dish. Portability is important and power for outdoor high light work, but i dont want to totally give up my felxibility will i using the single einstein?

i guess how much am i giving up having only one light available right now? i plan to add later as funds allow and i do have a single sb700 speedlight available if that would help at all?

Einstein + B400 if funds are tight.

The second light will come in handy, but the Einstein will likely be your workhorse. You'll be able to use your speedlight as your second (or third) light, but with the SB / BD the Einstein will prove its value. Having the B400 will obviously not be the power of the Einstein, but the flexibility of using your modifiers on either will afford a mix and match flexible system. Add additional lights as needed later ... the B400 still serves well as bg/hair/kicker/fill, so you've not lost anything (and the B400 is lighter).

im planning to add a second soon, as in a couple weeks after getting some other startup costs taken care of. i just have a couple of senior photo shoots at west baden springs hotel which is a historic venue around here, that im wandering if a single einstein with a big softbox would do the shoot.

get the Einstein and use your SB700 in the meantime.

Look up Zach Arias to see what you can do w/ "only" one light...

another nagging question, they say the ab1600 might be to much for a normal room? if it had a softbox on it is that truly the case?

A AB1600 won't go down to really low power. I could see it easily overpowering a small or normal size room. The ABs have three different models all based with different power levels. The AB400 is the lowest power, the AB800 is mid range, and the AB1600 is high power. The real beauty of the Einsteins is the fact that they have very good power control and basically cover the entire range of all three ABs (from very low power to very high power) all in the same unit. That along with the much better color control make the Einsteins much more attractive IMHO.

If you're going to be shooting outdoors I would recommend a beauty dish. If you're inside, I would suggest a large soft box. Be nice to have both. But it really depends on what you're shooting.

Especially on a low budget the PLM is a viable softbox substitute when you add a front diffusor (e.g. 64" total $ 75).

I currrently have 2 einsteins and 3 older White Lightning Ultra Zaps. If I was just starting, I would save my money and purchase an Einstein. One advantage is the wireless triggers specifically designed for the Einstein. Very small, inexpensive, simple to use.

And, I like the build quality of the Einstein and the older White lightning Ultra flash units over the Alienbees.

I'd also vote for the Einsteins. The additional flexibility in the power ranges compared to the AB's is really nice as is the remote controls.

I really like the PLM's but not sure how suitable they'd be for you. If you have very little wind, they could be nice.

I have Einsteins but am considering adding an AB1600 for outdoor use (Senior Portrait shoots) because of the long flash duration, allowing Supersync with Yongnuo 622c transceivers.

The 35" PCB Folding Octa is a popular choice for outdoor use.

I am not a fan of the PCB Beauty dish, but it is cheap. If you want a better dish, take a look at the Kacey 22" BD.

A Singh-Ray variable neutral density filter would be cheaper and a great alternative to trying to get a AB1600 to sync at higher shutter speeds.
