That's true. But if you follow the forum there, someone mentioned that this "4D" will be announced in something other than what sounds like "death" in Japanese. Also, don't forget that Nikon has D4 and F4.
Canon has different names for the models in Japan to begin with, right? I know they refer to the entry-level line as KISS (ie. 400D = EOS KISS X Digital), can't remember how they refer to the pro or semi-pro lines but since in most cases the number is replaced with a name, the whole '4' thing should be moot.

Here's the reason with added bits of useless trivia for your enlightenment.....
The Japanese don't like the number "4" because in Japanese its pronounced "shi" which is almost identical to "death"..... They also don't like "9" because "ku" is pretty close to "torture".
They don't like 13 for the same reasons we don't. This one was clearly adopted from western culture since they are not Christians and had no contemporary knowledge of King Phillip IV of France murdering the majority of the Knight's Templar on Friday, October 13, 1307 -- the historical origin of all our "Friday the 13th" bad luck myths.
In Japan, hardly anything (airline seats, gate numbers, building floors, etc) bears these numbers.
Funny because the G9 was somewhat "torturous" to use after they upped both the sensor and LCD rez but kept the same aged DIGIC3 processor from the G7. For PS, the G9 caused me to swear off the G series in favor of the S90, 95, 100. I'm considering a G15 now.

no , its only the rebel/kiss/xxxd line that has different names in diferent markets. everything else is all the same. so a 5D here is a 5D in the US and aisia

So we've had the 1DmkDEATH (I thought that was the the mk3)
Notice that the 1div is the last of the 1.3 lol.
I didn't even think of them and I use them! Haha

Why do you think Canon is more superstitious than Nikon (D4 and F4)?
Also, if Canon releases a 4D, it won't be pronounced as "shi-dii" anyway.
Canon is a more traditional company? Makes no sense since they are younger.... This is all speculative BS... but fun...
Here's some other curiosities from the numerology theory FWIW....
"8" is supposed to be a good or lucky number, but yet Canon's never had an 8-anything except some 8mm movie cameras ages ago. More recently, they went straight from "neutral" G7 to "bad" G9, skipping right over "good" G8.
The T4i seems to be doing quite well..... in America. Its called the Kiss X6i in Japan... supporting the numbers theory. OTOH, the T2i was the Kiss X4 in Japan.
No A or S series bore the numbers 4, 9, or 13.
Somehow the DIGIC "4" didn't imply impending death......
You know what, the miniscule amount of research I have done to come up with all this has convinced me there's nothing to the numbers theory..... never mind...

I was taught it was shi ne in judo. My Japanese is limited to my judo rank and anime lol.
You and I aren't too far apart in location. I'm about 45 from state college. If I'm ever in the area we should get together and shoot/drink some coffee.
