I spent much of my youth hiking and camping in the Superstition Mountains. The rugged terrain serves as a compelling icon that rises from the desert floor less than 30 miles from downtown Phoenix. As a photographer, I'm drawn to the Superstitions. I especially enjoy shooting the northwest face of the mountain when the last rays of sunshine illuminate the cliff faces. When a rare Arizona storm clears in the late afternoon and the sun finally breaks through the clouds on the far western horizon, it seems like a divine hand has thrown the switch that makes the Superstitions appear to glow from within.
