Just can't work out why Sony didn't take the last step of making this an interchangeable lens camera. That would have been ground breaking.

Making the camera interchangeable lens is easy enough but an interchangeable lens camera needs lenses for it as well. Look at how much time it has taken Sony to finally start putting together a somewhat decent lens lineup for its APS-C NEX system. Whats the point of launching yet another system without lenses. I am sure they must be working on an interchangeable lens FF NEX. However until the time they are ready to launch a new system with FF lenses, they just whipped together a camera for those who will buy it. Thats how Sony works - "we have the technology and the sensor in hand so why not". Plus there are some advantages to a fixed lens design as others have pointed out.

Go read theSuede's explanation of lens size on the last page. If we do see a FF Nex, it'll likely be to adapt a-mount lenses.

Well, I wouldn't say Leica territory, but the pricing isn't cheap as expected from a FF camera with lens.

However, if you look at second hand Leica prices, even obsolete stuff like the M8, you can see how well Leica products hold their value. You may pay a premium for Leica, but you recover a large part of it if you sell. I am not sure if this would be the case for this admittedly unique product.

I'm thinking a used M9 and ZM 35 will be in the $5-$6K range over here, so it's still quite a bit less expensive.

Well, the M9 has dropped $2-3K in a few years, and the M10 hasn't been announced yet. I'm sure the RX1 will still have some value in it in a few years.

Don't forget that the M9 is already one generation old behind the M9-P (although admittedly differences are only superficial) and that the prices dropped in anticipation for the M10, but once all the hype is over, prices are expected to go up again, unless Leica also releases the rumored ME. In this case, M9 owners are screwed

A slow POS old cr@p, sorry crop camera with a filter needed to take pictures?
How can you even put it in the same sentence with this amazing Sony achievement?
I'm really not getting it. What's wrong with you people?
OK, maybe it's too expensive for some. But you can't deny this is a ground breaking
camera, by far the most exciting thing in last few years.
This to me is as big as my first digital camera - Coolpix 990.

I'm excited about this camera. The sensor's going to be insane and hopefully the lens will match that. THE dealmaker or breaker for me.
Would've been nice if it had a tiltable LCD, but I was already expecting it wouldn't have one (because of the obvious resemblance with it's baby brother the RX100).

Now show us some example photos Sony

Relief! I'm so happy to see it shares the RX100 battery. That would have been a deal breaker for me in deciding whether to add the RX1 to my kit. Not sure I could have stomached having to buy a few extra spare batteries along with the RX1.

Perhaps I'm just being pessimistic. We will have to see what the actual street prices are. I do like it, I just can't afford it sadly. And cliche, I know, but if I were spending that much I'd want it to be an interchangeable system... As I'd ideally like to switch to a smaller system one day, or at least have it as a second. If it wasn't for that, I'd have no issue with it being fixed.

Just checked. M9 bodies selling at £2999.99 over here. Add a ZM 35/2 for £500. We're not far off... W/o knowing street price of course.

But seriously, the RX1 has me really excited about what the APS-C RX10 will be (loving my RX100). I'm not sure whether I'll spring for an RX1, but I think an RX10 could be really exciting. Either a fast prime or something like a faster integrated version of the 16-50 power zoom?

Sooner or later the SLT technology will go away anyway, leaving only mirror-less behind. Once the continuous AF issue is solved, there is no reason to keep the SLT mirror. Even if the lenses are not very small, you will get reduction in overall system size and weight compared to DSLRs and DSLTs.

I think this is one of the things I like about Sony. They don't force you to buy new batteries for every time a new camera comes out unlike Canon or Nikon. All the Nex models still use the same battery.

Ok it's convenient they share the same battery, but batteries cost almost nothing. I just got 2 knockoff ones for my RX100 (with a charger included) from ebay. Less than 20$ incl. shipping.
