Got up early (ish) this morning and headed out to the local wetlands for some more long lens practice. I think these are all taken with the 400 and 1.4x TC III (there may be an odd one with the 2x TC III)

Thanks. I was in a hide for some. #1, #2, #4 were likely resting on a benchtop. The others are hand held. I was crouched for the swan shots and rested my elbow on my knee I think.

Nice lens you have chosen! You will get better the more you shoot at locating the target earlier and panning with it. You might want to study up on the camera options for focus points and assist points and any adjusments that could help.
Sharpness is there, the heavy crops still look good so when you get a close one and it is in focus you are going to be grinning ear to ear as you count feathers and teeth

Thanks Karl. Choosing the right AF set up (5dIII) is proving tricky. logic seems to point to case 2 but I struggle to get locked on quick enough! I certainly did better this time than the last effort though!

Adam, you will grow to love your 400 2.8. I just replaced my old one with the new version and it is so sharp, even with a tc on. I can even hand hold it which is a real bonus. My only nit is the location of the focus range limiting switches. You did well with these and they will improve as you get used to finding and tracking them in the viewfinder. bruce

Thanks guys. I've had the lens for a couple of months, just not had too many opportunties to get out with it. Spring arrived in NZ last week so things are looking up!
