UPDATE: Some great info on which ring goes with which lens so I've added them up top.
28-300 L IS and 70-300 L -- C(W) ring
70-200 f/4 L (IS and Non IS), 300 f/4 non-IS L, 400 f/5.6, 80-200 f/2 L-- A (W) ring
70-200 f/2.8 L (Non, IS, IS II), 300 f/4 IS L, and 100-400 L -- B(W) ring
400 f/5.6 L -- A II (W) ring
ORIGINAL POST:
A friend is looking for one and I've been looking high and low on the internet for the name of the 300mm f/4 IS tripod mount so I can help him find the OEM item and generic alternatives to buy. Most of what I see is ones for the 70-200mm f/4 and the 70-200mm f/4 IS that the sites say will work with the 300mm f/4 IS but which i doubt since the body of the 300mm has those metal guides similar to the 70-200mm f/2.8.

It's the Tripod Mount Ring B(W). Same as for the 70-200/2.8L IS, 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS, and a few other lenses (not. incl. the 70-200/4L series, as you suspected).

When I need lens spec or accessory info I go here 1st, find the item needed and do a google search for best price...same for Canon bodies n other stuff

Really? The 300mm f/4 IS looks to be smaller than the f/2.8... to the point that I would think the 70-200 f/2.8 tripod collar would be too large for the 300mm IS. It could just be deceiving though. I'll give it a try.

thanks!
I have both the 70-200 f4L IS and 300 f4L IS and they use the same tripod collar/foot...I still have one attached to each cause my hands don't work great and I'm lazy
Where they differ is the front end, 67mm threads vs 77mm...that may be why the 300 seems bigger, it is and a bit more front heavy!

Hi Jerry,
Can you confirm when you get home? I think the two are not compatible because if I remember correctly, the 70-200mm f/4 IS body does not have those metal rivets to guide the tripod collar on while the 300mm IS does.

Sure, I'm home but without help right now (I'm disabled, paralyzed from the neck down) but my carer will be here this afternoon and we'll check them and I'll re-post...
PS. They are different, canon collars are ring A II (W) and ring B (W), I've a collar from opteka and fotodiox that work on both as well as the 400 f5.6L; but they adjust....
My mistake, if you buy the canon brand collar you'll need two and yes, no rivets on the 70-200, had not noticed
I don't have the 70-200 f2.8 to compare...

For reference, if nothing else, here's the complete list:
28-300 L IS and 70-300 L -- C(W) ring
70-200 f4 L (IS and Non IS) -- A (W) ring
70-200 f/2.8 (Non, IS, IS II), 300 f/4 IS L, and 100-400 L -- B(W) ring
400 f/5.6 -- A II (W) ring
You can almost always find 3rd party knock-off A (W) on eBay. Every so often B (W) knock-off's show up. They work fine although the color match isn't always perfect. It's close, though and they're a LOT cheaper.

That is for current lenses only. I know from experience that the 70-200/4, 70-200/4 IS, 300/4, and 400/5.6 can use the ring mount A. It can also be used with the insert for the old 100/2.8 macro.
