Of all the changes in CS6 (and Lightroom 4), the new "Process 2012" tonal controls in ACR are probably the most significant. Within those controls, the highlight and shadow recovery are major improvements over CS5.
Highlight recovery in CS5 was pretty good, but CS6 is amazing. I don't think any other raw converter or other utility comes close.

+1. With the highlight/shadow sliders in CS6's ACR, I have been able to create workable images from photos that I previously thought were completely unsalvageable.
Keep in mind that, with regard to rescuing highlights, LR4 has the same capabilites as the new ACR. So, if you don't need the full editing tools of CS6, LR4 is a good alternative.

+ 1 The shadow and highlights sliders in CS 6's Raw have quickly become indespensible to me.
LR4 is great if you are lucky enough not to be one of the ones with the speed affected. On my PC I can't handle the slowness of it. I have given up and am trying to find alternatives. If you decide on LR 4 be sure and try the30 days free download to test drive it first and make sure it works well with your system. Hopefully someone will figure out the problem soon.

If it's just a textural area which is blown, one can duplicate the layer. Then patch / clone the texture from an adjacent location to the blown area. Blend the layers to suite your taste.
Before blending, you might need to do some manual touch up to break any obvious patterns where the original image and new patch / clone area come together.
Other than that, +1 for CS6....

As long as one channel still hasn't blown out and still retains some highlight data , normally blue channel, you can use any of the following ways to do your ChOps,
