I recently switch to LR4 and upgrade to 4.1. But on my dual-quad core Mac Pro, it's still very slow, much slower than LR3. I searched a lot, but couldn't figure out how to make it run faster. Any suggestions here? Thanks.
B.T.W., I noticed that the problem stems from the loading of each image when I went through the import files. It took longer to do this in LR4 and the parameters can't be adjusted until the image was fully loaded.
You need to do that preference delete trick mentioned in a previous thread. That made a world of difference for me. I'll look for the link. 4.1 is the fastest & most stable version I've ever used. I'm not even going to upgrade again. lol

Is this "tweak" a Windows thing or for Mac as well?
I only use Mac, and it works, noticeably faster than before. At least I can use Motibodo to adjust the parameters when it still shows loading. But it is still slower than LR3. I hope LR4.2 would fix the issue.

What if I have no com.adobe.Lightroom4.plist file?
Make sure you are in the "right" preference folder. It's the preference under users/[your username]/Library. At first I didn't find mine either, but soon I realized I went into the "wrong" preference folder.

I am on a mac. I go to users/(my name)/ No library file. When I click on the hard drive icon from my desktop it has a library file. I click on that and click on preferences and no plist file.

The library folder is hidden, you can't see it under your username.
In order to get into the "RIGHT" preference folder, you need to :
1. First enter into the folder of your username on Mac
2. On the menu bar of your "FINDER", choose GO --> GO TO FOLDER ...
3. Enter "Library" into the input window, then press Enter key
4. Now you can see the hidden "Library" folder in your username folder
5. Go to find Preferences and then find the file

Hope this helps!!!
Thank you! Is upgrading the catalog okay or should I start a new one? Would that make a difference?
This is what I got from that thread from andrewho:
The preferences file is the com.adobe.Lightroom4.plist file, located in [user name]/Library/Preferences.
The [user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder contains:
Lightroom 4 Catalog.lrcat, the Lightroom database file
Lightroom 4 Catalog.lrcat.lock, which prevents you from overwriting data
Lightroom 4 Catalog Previews.lrdata. which contains preview data for your photos
Catalog backups are saved to [user name]/[catalog location]/[catalog name]/Backups/.
Installed and custom presets and templates have filenames ending in .lrtemplate and are located in the [user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom folder.
Registration data is in Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/.
Important: Apple made the user library folder hidden by default with the release of Mac OS X 10.7. If you need access to files in the hidden library folder to perform Adobe-related troubleshooting,
adobe said some slow LR issues were due to a corrupted lightroom profile. i deleted mine and it sped up quite a bit. your mileage may vary

I didn't upgrade my old LR 3 catalog as I didn't re-edit any previous images. So I can't tell if it's good to upgrade the catalog. I suggest you to create a new one for safety reasons.
When moving through images in the Develop module, the difference between LR4.1 and LR4.2-RC1 is like comparing a turtle to a dragster. On a well configured PC, you might even get subsecond response time.
