The point I was trying to make was that it is not a wide-spread or universal price drop or drops you implied in your post, at least not yet. Only Beach has made a few special deals in the last few weeks and nobody else. The official price will, of course, eventually drop, like any other cameras before the 5D Mark III but when and to what extent, who knows. I realized that you don't like the 5D Mark III for whatever reasons and that's is fine and you are entitled to your opinion but I know myself and a lot of others really enjoy that camera....Show more →
I would tend to agree if the frequency of these sales events were lower but the events are occurring frequently enough to where they represent a de facto price decrease. The events create the expectation of lower prices for future purchases along with a push/pull affect of immediate demand (ie, someone who wants to purchase in the next two weeks will wait for an event, so they affect the timing of immediate demand).
My 5d2 after 3.5 years of use (early adopter there too) dropped from 2700, to sold at 1600. Given my 5d3 is worth 2500 on used market right now probably, it depreciated about the same amount in 5 months. wow.
great deal.

I don't want to warm up and repat the whole earlier 5D III vs 5D II discussions a few months ago (whereby I was laughed at when saying that the 5D III will be at $2700 end of this year - and it already starts now!). At least I can claim that I had a 5D III in my hands, and compared to my 5D II, I only saw the benefit of better AF in the MkIII. Picture-quality-wise, no difference - no surprise since it is fairly much the same sensor. When I purchase a new camera, I need to see a step up in resolution and maybe DR. Just for getting an improved AF system, I don't spend even $2500 for a new camera, sorry.
On the other hand, if somebody wants to switch to full frame now and needs very good AF, the 5D III is a very good option (especially if the price reaches more "normal" levels).

I think the high ISO performance is completely discounted in your analysis, and it may be as such for your type of photography too. But many others would benefit from that and the frame rate increase as well.
FWIW, I e-mailed Beach Camera through their web site asking if the ebay account belonged to them and if so, why the drastic price difference between the site and online store. Here is the response (in less than 2 hours I will add):
Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting us.
We are the same as the Beacch camera that you see on EBAY. If the price is cheaper on EBAY, please make your purchase on EBAY. They are the same exact items. The only way that we can offer them for less on EBAY is because EBAY gives us some money back for selling this item on their website.
Sincerely,
xoxo -Sales Management

Congrats to all of you who got in on this killer deal!
I purchased one this a.m. on Ebay from Beach Camera. Now I'm going to have to part with either the 7d or 1d mk3 . If I like it and decide to keep the 5d3. Not sure I will like full frame cause I shoot a lot of sport action shots. If I don't like it, I will try to resale it for 2800.00 plus shipping.

You are correct, even on my 5D II I never go higher than ISO 6400, and even this is rare. I normally stick between 100-640. Fps is of no interest at all to me - I never take series of photos. As I said, the 5D III might be reasonable for the selected group of sports and wedding photographers.
They have good feedback, but most of their items clearly state that there is no manufacturer's warranty. My friend once bought a T3i from them and no USA warranty card was included. Also, they are not an authorized Canon dealer. So, it's up to one to judge if it's worth the risk of not having warranty for the price.
