I just bought a new 24-105/4L IS. The zoom operates smoothly, but there's a millimeter or two of play in the ring when changing direction. This is noticeable and makes a slight knocking sound. Is this par for the course with the 24-105, or do I need to send it to Canon to tighten it up?
I'm not sure I was clear above. On a continuous zoom from one end to the other, there's no play or slip. I'm concerned about a bit of wiggle where the ring can move slightly back and forth before the mechanism catches and the elements start to move. This 'play' exists at any focal length with my copy.
Lots of plastic parts, so a little play is normal. Mine gets a wee bit tighter when shooting in summer sun. Tolerances can't be as tight as the old style metal zooms of yesteryear. My lens hood is loose as a goose too and is getting worse by the month. The zoom play haven't changed much on my sample for the last 6 years.
