one dealer claims that but an even bigger dealer claims they have no word

if it is Nov I will def just wait until next summer at that point and hope for some deals and rebates by then and take more time to decide whether to give up 24 1.4 II for it or not

hmm maybe they really are adding IS to it
yes many say that a new design takes a year even from field pro-type, well, pretty soon it will be a year....

(although I'd rather have one so crazy sharp it outdoes a 24 1.4 II than IS myself)

I would say at least late sept. ~ oct.

Why give up the 24 1.4 for a 2.8 zoom? Even if the 24-70 II is comparably sharp @ 24mm, the 1.4 is well 1.4! You always get the 24 IS , yea its 2.8 but at least it has IS and its in stock now.

(I just dont get, why release a 24 AND a 28 IS, and both are available before the 24-70 II which is a MUCH more important lens in the lineup!)

Canon decided it is not (much more important). Do you know why? I do not. But I am pretty sure they (think they) do.

I will check the Tammy 24-70 VC during photokina and decide if it will replace my 24-105 L.

As much as I want the new 24-70mm II, I won't replace my 24-105L mainly because of IS. If I need a fast lens, I'll just use my 35L or 50L.

The 24 and 28 are supposedly targeted to the video market. Many people there use all primes.

I imagine that are supplements to the 1DC/C300/C500 releases, and the 5D3 of course, where an $800 lens is pretty trivial.

I still think we **have not** seen Canons video-centic, pro-sumer DSLR (little brother to the 1DC.)

Maybe a 3DC/5DC/7DC ? We will see. Unfortunately (for video folks), I think the High MP Full Frame may replace the lower xDC in the release lineup.

A 7D replacement, with either full frame or Super 35mm, with the dual processors, would be perfect for video.

Just my speculation though .....

Best,
Michael

I have always used the 24-70, 70-200 pair. I never really felt a need for IS on the first.

I always liked the brighter +1 stop viewfinder, even if I rarely shot at 2.8 The only 4.0 zoom was the 17-40 4.0 instead of the 16-35 mm. I never bothered to upgrade, because I actually never used the 17-40. This was all on full frame (1DsII, etc.)

For fashion/studio, I used the 24-70 for 85% of my work. The next most used were the 45 mm TS-E and the 90 mm TS-E.

I just aquired a 24-105 as part of a kit, but haven't tried it yet.

Just FWIW.

Best,
Michael

It wouldn't be bad to have zoom flexibility and not have to give up any quality at 24mm. MTF for it hint this may be possible. I would give up f/1.4, which can be cool at times, but I do use it 95% of the time at f/4 or more and often f/7.1-f/10.

The 24 IS could be interesting though, the IS would make it nice for hand held shots when you don't wanna drag everything down by constant tripod set-up and such. A 24 T&S II and a 24-70 II and a 24 IS and a 24 1.4 II all have uses, but I need to rob some banks first.

I dunno.

+1. Exactly. I am using my 50/1.2 and 35/1.4 a lot more than my 24-70/2.8.

Too late for me by a week. That reminds me to cancel all three of my orders.

Is $2300 still the selling price at BH and other US vendors? Any idea if it is cheaper elsewhere?

If it shows up before October, yes I would love to have this lens. If it misses it, then I'll cancel the pre-orders and wait indefinitely as there won't be a pressing need.

Its $2300 everywhere as far as I can tell. Its unlikely to get discounted until the pre-orders are filled and dealers starting stock on hand.

I'm really looking forward to the release of this lens. Unfortunately I will need to wait until a couple of price drops until I purchase it because there's no way I can justify dropping $2300 on it.

I'm just going to say that my two recent run ins with the 24 1.4 lead me to believe that they are all inconsistent focusing pieces of crap.

I know many love the lens but after several hours, hundreds of photos and 2 orders I think it sucks.

Good timing too because the 24-70 is my most used lens and I would love one that is sharper, and addresses some of the mechanical engineering issues that exist with the current one. I'm not knocking it, I'm just not discounting room for improvement.

In the meantime while I'm not able to buy this (limited quantities bleh) I'll be jealous of those of you who do get to use it and I'll also be jealous of those who got a functioning 24 1.4
