It is obviously very helpful to have such a responsive/agile, fast and well focussing camera such as 1DX, coupled with good 300 f/2.8 IS prime.
However, on rare occasion like the one depicted below, a zoom of the 200-400L type would have been helpful too, because as soon as one starts "zooming" with their feet, the movement generally exerts additional pressure on wild animals to flee.
I am curious to see what will the key traits of 200-400L be: IQ, AF response and weight.
The price we know already: very expensive.

Gorgeous shots, specially the one with the water spray.
Funny you should mention the additional pressure on wild animals to flee if you zoom with your feet, considering your suggestion to PixelPerfect to "leave the comfort of his truck and try to get closer to his target" to solve his FL limited predicament and fill the FF frame.

You seem to have peeked that pijun's interest just a bit, fantastic set Peter! The new AF, 12fps look quite helpful and the 18mp seems adequate, I'm guessing you'll be keeping your 1DX

A totally different situation there.
I meant for Pixie to reduce the distance to target from something like 80 ft to 40 ft, in order to come, generally speaking, within his 500 f/4 range.
In my situation above, I had to move sideways/away/downward relative to a bird which was 15 ft distant and already on high alert.

Is the 300 a vII?
Thanx, Jerry. That was the 300 MkI. Also, I was on low drive which I have set to 5 FPS.
I am still thinking about it, but probably I'll end up keeping 1DX if only for its good high ISO performance, but there are obviously other good features of that camera such as a civilized and mellow shutter sound.

Peter, you sure have a way with pijuns of all types!

I do like the sound of the 1DX shutter. Btw, I've always raised the continuous low setting on my 1D cams to 5 fps. I find it more useful than the default 3 fps, and still practical for single shots.

Wow. These all are great. Love the way the water surface has been transformed to almost a paint like quality in the first two. How deep is that water btw? Is the bird floating or wading?
