p.1 #1 · Canon Rokinon 85 1.4

I came across this lens on a site I buy/sell on and got it for 120 bucks, on amazon it showed to be at least twice expensive. I cant wait to get it in and try it, does anyone here have it? What do you think and can you post some pics you have taken with it(not all processed to hell and back)?

It's a nice lens. It is manual focus with good focus controls. The only real complaint I had was the minimum focusing distance was too long.

I tried it for a few days. Nice build, pretty decent IQ, but very difficult to focus wide open. Turns out I am not as good as AF for anything that's alive, which happen to be the only things I want to take pictures of with an 85 1.4...

same as Samyang, Vivatar and many other names. Good lens except for the chromatic abberations.

Good lens. If you don't have a super precision focusing screen (i.e Eg-S for the 5DII), the MF can be rather difficult. Swapping the screen made a huge improvement in accuracy

+1 on the long minimum focusing distance. I find it irritating, but not a deal breaker.

I think this is the main problem that many have. Stock screens are generally not good for MF and will not show accurate focus changes when the lens is wider than ~ f/2.8. This is a huge problem with this type of lens. A good screen is an absolute necessity IMO. After that it takes some practice and patience.

I have this lens and I regard it as one of my "art" lenses. In other words, when I want to take my time and get the composition just right this is a “go to” lens. When I want to take shots of my kids, then the 135L comes out with it's fast AF.

This lens is a good buy at the new price, but and insane deal with the price you paid. Very sharp and great bokeh.

It's a fine lens. It has the best bokeh for "challenging" backgrounds of all 80mm - 90mm lenses that I've used on full frame DSLR, including:

I think my copy is not a particularly good one, but the lens has some nice qualities.
It is not very easy to focus with, because the transition between in focus and out of focus
is not very distinct. It has some of the same diffuse bokeh characteristics as the Sigma 50/1.4
and many people like that.

I have heard that it is similar in design to one of the older Nikkor 85/1.4 designs (Ai-S

).
For the price, it's a very good way to investigate large aperture shooting. I would prefer
a good autofocus 85/1.4 that focuses quickly, but Canon doesn't offer one of those.

Doesn't the 40D have LiveView? That is what I use with this lens on my 5DmII. Obviously LiveView isn't a great solution in all situations. But I use this lens for senior portraits. I don't use it all the time, but I pull it out for a shot or two on most sessions when I want a very shallow DOF. LiveView works great for that, but I wouldn't want to shoot a whole session that way.

I have one and like it a great deal. Amazing performance for the price.

On a 5D with s-type focusing screen it is ok to use, but i would not say it was easy to focus. I wouldn't try it on anything with a smaller VF for certain.

Is there a chip for this cam to get the exposure meter to move?

I got his lens yesterday and I agree that the minimum focus distance of a ~3' isn't cool but it has alot of potential, IMO. I understand the chip for AF beep confirmation. I would love a chip that gave me an idea if I'm over or under on the meter, BEFORE, I took the shot.
