p.1 #1 · Photography in Public Places

Today’s New York Times has a thoughtful interview with Michael Osterreicher, general counsel for the National Press Photographer’s Association on the increasing difficulties photographers encounter when taking pictures in public places.

He also briefly discusses workshops he recently held with police in Charlotte and Tampa in preparation for the upcoming party conventions.

I'm not sure it wasn't just a myth that there were primitive tribes that believed a photograph stole a person's soul. That may have just been a racist myth--we seem to have plenty of pictures of every primitive tribe on the planet.

It seems like the people afraid a photograph is stealing something from them are the "civilized" people on the planet, not the primitive ones.
