My new (to me) 1D3 has pretty much been used exclusively with a 70-200L f/2.8 IS II since I have been able to get close enough to the action to not need anything longer.
However, I am anticipating needing to use my 100-400L in the future.
The manual clearly states that at f/5.6 all 45 AF points will be horizontal-line sensitive only, thus when I am at or near 400mm, I will have no cross AF sensors. With my 7D, all of its 19 points remain cross-type at f/5.6.
My question to 1D3 users, what is your experience with AF speed and accuracy in both one-shot and servo when shooting a lens with a maximum aperture of f/5.6? Perhaps you birders who fancy the 400 f/5.6 prime can chime in? Will I notice focussing issues that I have not experienced previously because I've been living at f/2.8? FYI, when I shoot in servo I almost always have the 6 surrounding assist points active.
Thanks much!
