Regards,

It finally cleared up in Summit County last night, so I headed up to the top of Loveland Pass, CO (11,990' MSL) to try and catch the end of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Below is one image from the set, showing the International Space Station passing into the earth's shadow, as well as the Envisat satellite flaring at top left center. It was my first time shooting at night with the 5D MkIII, and I'm quite happy with the results, especially given the rather 'slow' lens used (EF 16-35/2.8L II).

If you want to see additional images and a time-lapse video of the ISS traversing low over the horizon, check out the full blog post:

Regards,

Jeff

Beautiful! Light pollution ruins just about any chance I have at any astrophotography.

Great shot, thanks for sharing. The only one I saw was after I had broken down the camera and was heading it.

Yeah, the best ones I saw was a series of four or five that occurred over about a minute as I was setting up. Never saw any more like it.

Be sure to check out the timelapse video of the ISS traverse at the link provided, it's only four seconds long, covering 12 minutes (I wish we could embed video in posts here). When I first saw the image above I thought the Envisat flare was a meteor, that is until I assembled the timelapse and saw it go all the way from top to bottom in several frames.

Glad you all enjoyed...

Nice images and video on your site! Looks like the 5D3 handles long exposures a bit better than my 7D hehe.

I went out Sunday morning around 3AM Eastern and saw a pretty good show. The peak was supposedly from 11-3 so I likely missed the best stuff. As I was setting up my camera a huge, blue fireball went over lighting everything up. Best meteor I've seen. Unfortunately I wasn't ready for it... I did get some photos of the trail it left behind which persisted for 8 minutes! Pretty wild.

That sounds very cool, John. I've only seen one fireball back in the late 80's at Sequioa Kings Canyon NP. Such an amazing thing to have the darkness interrupted by daylight from an overhead meteor; I'll never forget it.

One more image, an overhead of the Milky Way with a meteor in the lower left corner:

FYI, I spent a few hours this morning compositing ~7 minutes of the time-lapse images into one final image showing the ISS's path, which I posted in the landscape forum:

I enjoyed the video and other stuff on your site. Commented there but forgot to thank you here. Weather and city lights kept us from seeing anything this time, so your pics were especially welcome to me.
