I know people complained endlessly about the mail-in rebates, but they seemed to be actual rebates rather than fake discounts. I mailed in dozens of those things for 20 years without any problems. And, yeah, I just saw a couple of those lenses selling for less on Amazon sans rebate...
For those concerned about the "faux rebate" pricing, just be patient. This is nothing new, and after some of the first, impatient buyers jump in, there is a good chance that many of the lenses will be available at prices that are a bit lower.

The 600EX-RT went up $10 at B&H from yesterday with the new "rebates". Uggh.
Again, I've often observed an initial increase like this with previous (instant or otherwise) rebates, often leading to a lot of angry teeth-gnashing arguments. Trust me that it isn't worth the debate. Just be a bit patient and if the lens you really want is included in the rebate there is a very good chance that in a few weeks or a bit more you will find that the price goes back to the previous level and you'll save a few more dollars. If you can't wait, just swallow hard and buy it right now and be glad for the small savings.
Oh yeah, big savings. Adorama was selling the 50 f/1.4 before the rebate for 359.00 - now it is 399.00 list with the $40 rebate which brings it down to 359.00.
That is another cause why I like to buy at my dealer in his shop. Last time he told me: "Wait for two weeks. Canon will give new rebates." He did not increase his price. Here in germany the rebates are payd back from Canon themself. The dealer does not earn 1€ more or less.
