Exactly, I paid something like $2300-2400 for mine brand new. It's taken plenty of great photos over the years - so no regrets. Maybe when the shutter inevitably breaks I will buy a newer Nikon.
yeah, $1,800 no way i'm even stopping to look at that auction/ad....to me, it goes like this: 25k clicks and less, $1700....75k and less, $1600...more than 100k, better be $1500.....that's just me..(this is for body only, batter, and charger)

^for now, but next month? Camera bodies' value generally just heads in one direction - down. The D700 is an absolutely killer camera, so whether you pay $1400 or $1800, as long as you get one in good working order just enjoy it thoroughly before it's worth next to nothing in a few years.
Pro glass is another matter entirely. Bought used, it loses very little value or even goes up, since new prices have just been ratcheting up like clockwork the past few years
I just bought one that had just over 10k clicks with aftermarket grip and extra battery for $1600 last month. Not sure if that helps much but it seemed like a good enough deal to me seeing what they were all going for at the time.

I had two, with grips. Sold one in January for $2,400 and one in April or May for just under $2,100. Both had slightly more than 75,000 clicks.
Yeah, well it's Aug now and there's a D800 out for $3K. New D700's are $2100 and refurbs ~$1900 so it's
safe to say those days are gone. Funny, when the D700 1st came out I scored a couple for $2135 ea
brand spankin' new. They had a great run, didn't they.
