After a couple of weeks of just using my 1DX for "any camera could do that" stuff, I finally put it through its paces in a challenging application - cycling, specifically, a criterium.
Settings were mostly manual exposure and Case 3 for AF. All of them with 200 f/2, IS Mode 2. 10fps on my 1D3 was great because I was guaranteed to get a couple perfectly-focused frames. 12fps on the 1DX is a curse because they're almost all in focus...it's too many to choose from!
Thanks for looking. More photos here if you're interested: linky
Thanks guys. Decided to keep it as simple as possible from a gear standpoint. Brought no lights, no other lenses, just the inconspicuous and lightweight 1D+200 combo
Nice "Crit" shots!!! I'm going to begin shooting a bit locally here in St. Louis area...Though not with a 1Dx and 200L IS...Nonetheless, nice shots to study for composition and tracking!!! We just had the Maplewood here, and I rode a 56 miler on Saturday Aug 04, Lupus WolfRide GranFondo. Awesome people and amazing experience!!!
Great images! Your work is definitely worthy of the investment in the equipment!
I used to race, but broke up my body too badly in crashes and eventually had to quit.
I actually coached a team and did photography from the pace car, etc my last season. I guess it was just too hard to stay in contact without being able to ride.
Do most folks know that your "A moment of quiet reflection" is the guy blowing his nose?
Cyclists surely do. Is it worth explaining to novices?
great series of photos on your site/blog! should've posted a few more of those on here as well (my opinion) to showcase more of the feel, but i really like your shooting style + mix of images.. def get the sense that you have fun with it all too, which makes it all even better..
enjoy your amazing gear - i have a feeling that whenever i finally pick up my 200f2L, that lens will never leave my 1Ds3 body ever again.. =D

Thanks! Shooting cycling is a lot more fun if you also ride; you know what to look for. Enjoy

Thanks! Every time the 200 goes on the camera, magic happens. Addictive.
I'm searching for the best in motor sports, manuel selection is here often so quick, that sometimes the point switch to fast, so then the sharpness is on the wrong spot.
