Hi guys I have the above lens which is an absolute corker. The trouble is due to recently moving house i'm not sure I can justify that much money sitting in my camera bag.
So If you were in the same position as me in that i'd like to sell this lens to free up some cash what 'cheaper' nikon branded lens would you get to replace it.
I'd want either 24 or 28mm focal range as i use it mainly for landscapes though I do use the shallow depth of field capabilities for environmental portraits now and again
If you primarily shoot landscape, why not get the Nikkor 24mm f2.8? I've had the MF and the AF versions of this lens... I've had the MF version for 14 years (sold the AF as it offered only disadvantages for my shooting). For my style of shooting (landscapes), I see no reason to go with the 24mm f1.4. Perhaps I'll rent one some day, but the speed is unnecessary. If it is in fact sharper then I guess that's a reason, but I find the 24mm f2.8 to be a great lens.
Going from 24/1.4 to 24/2.8 any version is simply disappointing. The only acceptable downgrade is to 28/1.8 G which is a great lens, a steal for the money.

Honestly the DOF between the 1.4 and 2.8 aren't as much of a difference you'd be thinking it is. It's lot more noticeable on a 50mm or 85mm lens.
The 24mm F2.8 is one of the biggest bargains out there, period.
It outperforms the 24-70 @ the 24mm focal lenght for what it's worth.
The 28mm F1.8 sounds like a great idea EXCEPT it's not sharp wide open and doesn't get really sharp until F2.8. So what's the point of having F1.8 to 2.8 if it's not going to be comparably sharp.
Nikon still has not replaced the 28mm F1.4D. The other 28mm lenses just aren't up to grade with their 24mm counterparts. Maybe when they release a 24mm F1.8 or 24mm F2 we'll get reason to celebrate.

I do not know how you found this... If you read the photozone's reviews for 28/1.8G and 24/2.8 AF-D you'll see that 28's sharpness wide open is almost equal with 24's sharpness at f11.
I own 28/1.8G after I owned 20/2.8, 24/2.8 24-70/2.8 Sigma 24/1.8 and IMHO its IQ including here sharpness could not be compared with any from the list. I still own Nikon 24/1.4 that's my favourite lens... but I purchased 28G because I do not like to take on streets, when travelling or in non important situations the 24/1.4. I found that the trio 28/50/85 f/1.8 G is the perfect allround kit for me. Usually I add a MF Nikkor just for fun and that's it.

The 28/1.8G is the way to go. But for a little less cost you could try the Sigma 24/1.8 or 28/1.8. I had the 24/1.8 and it was pretty good but a little soft wide open.

The 24/1.4 is the one lens not to sell. Try to find something else that you can sell to raise money. Don't think about the 24/2.8, I had one, lovely lens, but not in the same league by any means (and it does not outperform the 24-70, either, not even close). The only lens that is somewhat comparable to the 24/1.4 is the Zeiss 25/2, but even that lens has worse corners than the 24/1.4 (less CA though), and anyway it would not help you money wise.

My choice is the 28G. The old 28 f2.0 AIS is not bad either, BTW. I wouldn't recommend the Sigma's in that range, the ones I once tested were soft wide open, with a lot of CA.

I agree, that is the biggest line of BS I have read in a long time. I've had three 28MM F1.8G lenses in my hands, and every single one of them has been DEAD sharp wide open.

I'll third this. The 28g is dead sharp wide open in the center. It renders a beautiful picture at 1.8
The 24g is wider, 2/3 stops faster and has better build quality. I haven't compared the two side by side but maybe the 24 will maintain the sharpness a little further towards the edges. No doubt I'd take the 24 if they were closer in cost but with the difference being $1,400 I'm all over the 28 1.8g.

I owned the 24 for a couple of years and loved the look it gave. In all honesty I think the 28g is the closest to the 24 of any lens I've seen. The color and sharpness just has that certain look that previously only the 24 had.
